Welsh Open - Sat 8th Nov 2014
Women Sabre (32 fencers)
Constance Goulletquer - L8 - 7th
Day's Summary:
Unfortunately, as the only other person from Brunel Fencing in Cardiff on this date was off supporting something else, Constance had to make the trip alone and unsupported. However, with the might of Facebook's enthusiastic encouragement behind her, and with a characteristic underdog seeding and attitude, Constance ventured forth.
Despite having one of the lower seeds of those present, and with very little match practice or training behind her, Constance smashed her poule 4 up 1 down and was ranked 7th. Whilst a slight surprise, what with having a number of top 20 and several top 10 fencers in the list, and the UK no.9 in her poule, Constance continued her good form, using the momentum to plough her way into the quarter finals. Unfortunately, this stage proved one too far, and she was knocked out 15-9 to the second ranked fencer.
Overall, a hell of a performance, arguably her best yet and against the strongest field she's yet had to face. Yet another fantastic marker of her development, from novice to medal winner, over two and a bit years. Keep it up!

Leon Paul Novice Open - Sat 18th Oct 2014
Women Sabre (6 fencers)
Constance Goulletquer - Gold - 1st
Men's Foil (16 fencers)
Ben Woolley - Bronze - 3rd
Day's Summary:
On a day when both our fencers took a while to brush the cobwebs off their fencing, results were mixed. Both Constance and Ben were major players in their respective poules, with Constance particularly dominant, yet at this stage neither were fencing particularly well. Little did it matter though as gradually the opposition was whittled down, with both fencers seeded 1st after poules.
Ben received his medal first, having won a closely fought quarter final against a tricky lefty, before succumbing in his semi final in a close and well-fought match. Trailing towards the end, Woolley mounted a comeback but it was in vain, with the match going to the other chap 15-13.
Constance's route to the final was less tricky, with reasonably comfortable victories against all her opponents. Despite the fact she never really reached top gear, and in spite of her constant irritation at herself, the performances steadily improved, as did her confidence. By the time the final was over, the victory was complete, a dominant performance with a misleading scoreline. Having dominated the early exchanges, Constance's opponent staged a comeback as fatigue set in, but it wasn't enough, with Constance sealing the deal 15-12.
